Introduction

The cycle of relapse in addiction doesn’t have to be part of your story anymore.

In the world of recovery, we often hear the phrase, “Relapse is part of recovery.” At one time, that was my story, too, but I finally broke the cycle.

Last year was one of the hardest years I’ve experienced since getting clean. I was grieving significant losses, dealing with multiple health issues, handling family drama—all while working full-time, going to school, and trying to build a business. The holistic wellness routine I had built for myself when I first got clean had fallen to the wayside.

Thankfully, I had the foresight to recognize I was entering dangerous territory and had the tools in my toolbox to catch myself. So what did I do? Well, I returned to my foundation and reignited my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being—and ultimately landed right back on the path I’m on today: happy, grounded, and clear.

I didn’t have to pick up a drug to cope. I didn’t have to run to multiple 12-step meetings because I had developed something more substantial over time: internal agency.

That agency stems from years of self-improvement through various holistic modalities. I tapped into my inner strength to rebuild my external life. My wellness routine has shifted across different seasons of life, but the foundation stays the same. That’s the same framework I now share through my work at Sonya Kapcin Coaching.

When things got rough, I returned to my basics:

  • Emotional agency

  • Meaningful relationships

  • Career clarity

  • Mental sharpness

And I rebuilt from there.

The Truth About the Relapse Cycle of Addiction (That We Don’t Talk About Enough)

The National Library of Medicine says it plainly in their Addiction Relapse Prevention article:

“Individuals recovering from various forms of addiction frequently encounter relapses that have gained acceptance as an almost inevitable part of the recovery process. However, the normalization of relapses can reduce the urgency for providers, patients, and supporting individuals to prevent them from occurring.”

Let’s be real—one relapse too many can be our last. We can’t afford to ignore that urgency.

Most recovery professionals—and most of us who’ve lived it—know that relapse happens on multiple levels before we ever pick up a substance.

According to Psychology Today, relapse is broken down into three key stages:

  • Emotional Relapse: You’re not thinking about using yet, but your self-care is slipping.

  • Mental Relapse: Cravings creep in. You fantasize. You minimize. Tension builds.

  • Physical Relapse: You pick it up. And once you do, it’s hard to stop. (Hopefully you make it back!)

That’s why we must develop the agency to self-monitor—to recognize the signs early and intervene with compassion, not shame.

My Coaching Isn’t About Polishing You—It’s About Grounding You

As a Certified Holistic Recovery Coach, I help people in recovery from substance use disorder create meaningful and personalized routines that align with their most authentic selves. We partner up to create a life and routine that carries you through the good and the bad times, so when hard things hit, you’ve got an internal and external foundation to tap into. I help people move beyond abstinence by creating a recovery lifestyle anchored in wholeness, self-care, and resilience. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is agency. So when life gets loud, you can hear yourself and answer the call.

Most experts agree that long-term recovery happens when we care for ourselves on all levels—emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Whether through therapy, medication, meetings, community support, or coaching, it all counts. It’s about finding the right mix for you.

I trained at the Holistic Coach Training Institute, where our coaching is grounded in the Ten Guiding Principles of Holistic Coaching. This model is about treating the whole person. We can’t heal in isolation. We need to engage all aspects of ourselves to reach our full potential.

I also bring years of lived experience and a background in mental health to this work, and I walk this path alongside my clients.

Recovery Isn’t About Just Staying Clean—It’s About Coming Alive

You’re not a failure if traditional recovery didn’t work for you. It didn’t work for me either.

I tried it all—rehabs, meetings, MAT. I kept trying to fit myself into a box that never felt like home. And that kept me stuck for years.

Once I leaned into holistic recovery, everything changed. I discovered a deeper purpose—one that aligns with who I am. And from there, I could finally be part of something greater.

I’m not here to reinvent the wheel or bash anyone’s path. If the 12-step programs work for you, that’s beautiful. My coaching complements what you’re already doing, rather than replacing it. Once I discovered what I had built for myself, I made it my mission to become a coach so I could help others find the same freedom.
